the fucked up SGI O2 - it's a fucked computer charlie brown

i called the older one an adventure so far in the last post

i got that computer at some point in 2024, a weird era in my life, a weird era in between eras.

the computer itself is cool, yeah fancy 3d jurasic park unix workstation

but also is a hunk of rusted metal, that just blink two lights and nothing else

last time i powered it on, it did something, it got to a point where i was able to diagnose an specific issue, then it sat on the floor of my storage unit for almost two years and then spent a bit more sitting in viña del mar, also on the floor.

i love the concept of the thing, but don't love the concept of the real thing i had.

it's time to just trash it, whole.

"keep it, it's kinda weird, you should keep it, don't trash it" said some people on mastodon

i get the vibe, we see people dumping old computers and making them scarce because of that

but there is also the whole mental weight the thing have, i feel like i'm done with it, im doing amazing progress on clearing out my storage unit of stuff i don't care about, some laptops that are getting old

some devices i will never use, some piles of old hard disks i will never use

why a literal hunk of rusty tetanus ridden metal with a plastic base will be a winner on that selection, when i have pretty good computers i do want to actually keep.

it's time to undestand that not everything is about a piece of hardware, there is a mental aspect of the holder that gets overlooked

I need to trash it, to do the real act of moving on from it, it was kinda a staple of an era that i was so into shit that a metal case with a motherboard inside was attractive to get delivered to my place from another city, no thanks.

I'm seeing the old computer slowly die, crumble, rot, displays get issues, hinges break, cases become brittle.

let's enjoy what is there to enjoy, and for me that is mostly my mind being happy with the stuff i like.

that's all, the end of the history for that specific bit of electronics.

best regards, the tiger that eats computers.
